Coffee Hour: Commemorating the life of Archbishop Romero 6/12
Saturday June 12/2010
10:00am-11:45am
At the Resource Center of the Americas
Presented in English
Description:
March 24, 2010 was the 30th anniversary of the assassination of Archbishop Romero. This year’s commemoration of his life was highlighted by the Salvadoran government’s recognition of him as the country’s Spiritual Guide and the world premiere of a documentary film about Romero. Wayne Wittman and Duane Krohnke will talk about their trip to El Salvador for this occasion. They will also talk about other current events in that country: • the controversies over CAFTA (Central American Free Trade Agreement) and gold mining; • the continuing controversy over the training of Salvadoran military officers at the School of the Americas (now the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation); • the lives and deaths of the four American church women in December 1980; • the continuing vitality of the University of Centro America (UCA); • the new school in the town of La Loma in Comasagua; • the repopulation of the town of Cinquera in Chaletanago; • the struggle for land in Tonacatepeque; and • women’s empowerment in San Pablo Tacachico.
Romero’s murder was 30 years ago, the civil war ended 18 years ago – why are these issues still compelling today?
