Mexico’s second presidential debate was, in a word, disappointing. Authorities anticipate a high level of participation in these elections. People are organizing to participate as observers, voters, representatives of their parties, media monitors and informed citizens. Hopefully the third debate in June will reflect the high level of preparation and seriousness that an ever-more active citizenry deserves.

Nearly a million young people marched for their lives on March 24 in Washington DC and cities throughout the nation. They railed against the fact that in the wealthiest country in the world, youth no longer feel secure in their schools, their neighborhoods and their daily lives, and demonstrated against the politics that promotes the death industry over their survival.
The era of Trump marks a change that replaces the construction of hemispheric agendas with mere demands that other nations back up the U.S. government in its war policies, and an attitude of intolerance and aggression toward political situations that prevail in other countries of the region that contributes nothing to resolving them.
La era Trump marca un punto de inflexión y reemplaza la construcción de agendas en el continente por simples exigencias de respaldo a su política guerrerista y una actitud de intolerancia y agresión a situaciones políticas que prevalecen en algunos países de la región, que en nada contribuyen a solucionarlos.
We want to take advantage of this process to reach every corner of this country, especially our communities, but also in the cities, to say we need to create another form of government. And that this government needs to emerge from people who get organized.
Mexico’s transition to democracy has not been a linear path of progress. From the late 80’s with the split in the Revolutionary Institutional Party, to the triumph of the conservatives in 2000, to the return of the ruling party, it has been a bumpy road. There are few people who know this process as well or have played such an active role as Porfirio Muñoz Ledo.
